Jill Scott was born on April 4, 1972, at Philadelphia Pennsylvania to her mother Joyce Scott. Being a single girl She was also raised by her maternal grandmother. Scott completed her studies at the Philadelphia High School for Girls. Then she enrolled in Temple University. At Temple University, Scott had two jobs while she was learning about secondary education. Her goal was to be a high school English teacher. She was unable to fulfill the dream after studying for three years while working as a teacher assistant, she quit college. Her career began by singing live poetry and performing the work of her own. In the end, she teamed up along with Amir Quest Thompson, a member of The Roots. You Got Me was co-written by both. At the Roots performance, she declared herself as a musician. Afterwards she was able to secure collaborations such as Eric Benet Will Smith and Common. During the Canada tour of the Broadway musical Rent the Musical, she gained valuable performance experience. She was hired to Hidden Beach Recordings as their first signing artist.
